Outreach methods vary depending on the target population and organization needs. The following projects gave me the opportunity to reach out to support libraries, college students and increase participation in programming.
Making Connections film project
|
Working with the U.S. IMPACT Study, we produced a video title, Making Connections, for the 2011 American Library Association conference to show librarians how to make their own library advocacy videos. My role in the project was to recruit library patrons inside the Seattle Public Library to participate in the film. We sought patrons who used the library's computers and Internet access to improve their lives. I ensured patrons a safe and comfortable space to share their experiences on camera and I learned how to ask questions while reaffirming them that their values and experiences were valid and appreciated. I am prepared to manage a team of staff and volunteers to create future advocacy and outreach videos.

Photo Book Project
While at Sacramento State, I served as student coordinator of the Sociology mentoring program, SOC Connect. During the spring semester, I developed and designed a photo-book for mentoring partners using www.blurb.com. The goal was to create a promotional tool to advocate for the program and Sociology Department. Students included a biography about themselves and their experience in the program. Since the program's inception in 2009, it has flourished to become a signature program in the Sociology Department. To view a complete PDF version of the book, please click on the link below.

Publicity
At Sacramento State's Multi-Cultural Center, I frequently assisted with the development of promotional materials including program flyers and a quarterly newsletter, or zine. The flyers and zine were not only a creative outlet, but also allowed for critique and revision from each initial concept during weekly meetings with the intern cohort and staff. We were conscious of our limited resources for printing and design, but learned to be creative using Microsoft Publisher to finalize materials that truly reflected the goals of the center. From this experience, I've learned to be open to new and alternative ways to publish information that are both informative and stretches my limits for creativity. I expect to design superior promotional tools.
